How to Plan a Perfect Full Day at St. Thomas Bay, Marsaskala

St. Thomas Bay is where Sips Water Sports is based and, for our money, one of the best places to spend a full day in South Malta. It is calm, accessible, and has enough going on to fill a day comfortably without needing to travel anywhere else. Here is how to make the most of it from morning to evening.
Morning: Get on the Water Early
The sea around St. Thomas Bay is at its best in the morning. The water is flat, the light is good, and the bay is quiet before the day heats up properly. This is the best time to book a water sports session.
A 30-minute jet ski session in the morning gives you the best conditions and sets the tone for the rest of the day. If you are a group, the paddle boats are a good option for a slower, more social start. SUP rentals are also available and work particularly well when the water is this calm.
Late Morning: Explore the Coastline
Once you have had your first activity, the bay itself is worth exploring. The coastline around St. Thomas Bay has clear, shallow water that is good for snorkelling. You do not need any special equipment, just a mask and a snorkel, and the rocky areas at the edges of the bay have plenty to look at.
If you have booked boat hire for the day, the late morning is a good time to head out along the coast towards the Blue Grotto or Delimara Point before the sea traffic picks up.
Midday: Swim and Eat
By midday the bay is warm and the water is at its most inviting. This is the time to slow down, find a good spot, and spend a couple of hours swimming and relaxing. St. Thomas Bay has several easy entry points along the rocky shoreline and the water stays relatively calm throughout the day.
There are places to eat nearby in Marsaskala, which is only a short drive or walk from the bay. The town has a good selection of restaurants and cafes along the seafront that do simple, well-priced food.
Afternoon: Book a Tour
The afternoon is a good time for the dolphin watching tour if it fits your schedule. The tour runs for around an hour and leaves from the bay, so you do not need to go anywhere. Alternatively, if you want more time on a jet ski, afternoon slots are usually available and the sea conditions are still good.
The Blue Grotto Jet Ski Tour is also an option for the afternoon, though we recommend the morning for that one given the light conditions at the caves.
Evening: Marsaskala Seafront
Marsaskala itself is a proper Maltese town rather than a tourist resort, which makes it a genuinely pleasant place to spend an evening. The seafront promenade runs along the bay and is a good spot to walk, sit, and watch the water as the light changes.
There are bars and restaurants along the front that do well-priced food and cold drinks. It is the kind of place where the evening happens at whatever pace you set it, which after a full day on the water tends to be a fairly relaxed one.
What to Book in Advance
If you are planning a full day at St. Thomas Bay in peak season, it is worth booking your water sports activities the day before at minimum. Jet ski sessions and boat hire in particular fill up in July and August.
