How to Get the Most Out of a Private Boat Hire in Malta

How to Get the Most Out of a Private Boat Hire in Malta

Renting a private boat for the day is one of the best ways to see Malta. You set the pace, you choose where to go, and you are not stuck on a schedule dictated by someone else. But to actually get the most out of it, a bit of planning goes a long way.

Here is everything worth knowing before you head out on the water.

What Boat Are You Getting?

At Sips Water Sports, the self-drive boat hire is the Hydra 530. It is a well-built, easy-to-handle boat that does not require any prior experience to operate. You get a full briefing before you set off, and the team will run you through everything you need to know before you leave the bay.

It seats enough people for a relaxed group day out and handles the waters around South Malta comfortably. A skipper is available to hire if you would prefer not to drive yourself.

Plan a Rough Route Before You Leave

You do not need to map out every minute of the day, but knowing roughly where you want to go makes a difference. The South Maltese coastline has a lot to offer within easy reach of Marsaskala: the Blue Grotto, St. Peter's Pool, Delimara Point, and various quieter coves that you simply cannot get to any other way.

Ask the team before you head out. They know the area well and can point you towards the spots that are worth the trip based on how long you have the boat and what you are looking for.

Fuel Is Not Included

This is the one thing people sometimes forget to account for. Fuel is excluded from the rental price, so factor that into your budget when you book. How much you use depends on how far you go and how hard you push the boat, but the team can give you a rough idea based on your planned route.

Book the Longer Session If You Can

The minimum hire is two hours. That is enough to get out, see a couple of spots, and come back. But most people who book two hours wish they had booked more. The seven-hour option gives you a proper full day on the water. You can anchor up somewhere quiet, swim, have lunch, explore a bit further, and still get back without rushing.

If your group is the type to spend the whole day at the beach anyway, spending it on a private boat is a straightforward upgrade.

Go Early

The sea around South Malta is calmest in the morning. Wind tends to pick up in the afternoon, which is not a problem but does change the character of the ride. If you want the flattest, clearest water for swimming and snorkelling, an early start is worth it.

It also means you beat most of the other boats to the best spots.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen, and more than you think you need
  • Snorkelling gear if you have it, or ask us about availability
  • Food and drinks for the day as there are no shops once you are out
  • A waterproof bag for your phone and valuables
  • Water shoes if you plan to stop at rocky coves

Pricing starts from 60 per hour (minimum 2 hours). Skipper available at an additional 15 per hour. Fuel excluded. Call +356 79506675 to check availability.
