The Best Time of Year to Visit Malta for Water Sports

Malta has one of the longest water sports seasons in the Mediterranean. The combination of a warm climate, calm sea conditions for most of the year, and reliable sunshine means there is rarely a bad time to visit if you are planning to get on the water. That said, different times of year offer very different experiences, and knowing what to expect helps you plan the right kind of trip.
June, July and August: Peak Season
This is when Malta is busiest and the weather is at its most consistently hot. Sea temperatures in July and August sit around 26 to 27 degrees Celsius, which makes getting in and out of the water all day entirely comfortable. The sun is strong and the days are long, giving you plenty of time to fit in water sports alongside everything else.
The downside of peak season is exactly what you would expect: more people, higher accommodation prices, and a need to book activities further in advance. Jet ski slots, boat hire, and tours fill up quickly in August. If you are visiting in peak season, book as early as you can.
May and September: The Sweet Spot
Most people who know Malta well will tell you that May and September are the best months to visit. The weather is still genuinely warm, the sea has either already heated up or is still retaining the summer warmth, and the crowds are noticeably thinner.
For water sports specifically, September is excellent. The sea is at its warmest of the entire year after months of summer heat, conditions are generally calm, and you have a much better chance of getting the activity you want on the day you want it. May is slightly cooler but still very good, particularly for longer sessions on the water.
October and April: Shoulder Season
These months are less predictable but can offer great value and quieter conditions. October in particular can be surprisingly warm, with sea temperatures still above 23 degrees and genuinely good days mixed in with the occasional overcast one. April is similar, with the sea warming up from the winter and the island beginning to come alive again after the quieter months.
Water sports are available during these months, though some activities have reduced hours or availability. It is worth checking in advance if you are planning a trip in April or October with specific activities in mind.
November to March: Off Season
Most water sports operators in Malta scale back significantly or close entirely during the winter months. Sips Water Sports follows a seasonal schedule, so if you are visiting between November and March, the full range of activities may not be available. The weather is mild compared to northern Europe but the sea cools considerably and conditions are less predictable.
Winter is a good time to visit Malta for culture, history, and food. For water sports, you are better off planning for the warmer months.

- Best for water sports: June to September
- Best balance of weather and crowds: May and September
- Most intense season: July and August — book well in advance
